Acerola
Acerola cherries are incredibly high in Vitamin C. Just one little berry contains 30 times the same amount of Vitamin C as there is in an orange. Rich in mineral salts (such as iron, calcium, and phosphorous) and essential vitamins such as Vitamin A, B1, B2 (riboflavin) B3 (niacin) and E, acerola also contains magnesium, potassium, selenium, copper, manganese and zinc. Nutritionally dense, it’s definitely up there with the big hitters.
Baobab
Packed full of Vitamin C & B6, calcium, potassium, thiamine and fibre, baobab is really, really good for you. It grows in Africa and some parts of Australia and has one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any fruit in the world – even more than that of blueberries and pomegranates combined. Being an excellent source of Vitamin C, it helps protect cells from oxidative stress and enhances the natural formation of collagen in your skin. Meaning it’ll help you look as good as you feel.
Cacao
Enjoyed in Latin American cultures for generations thanks to its superfood health-giving properties, cacao is naturally rich in magnesium, iron, flavanols and antioxidants, as well as being a natural source of protein and fibre. It is also known for supporting good blood health and overall wellbeing. And the fact that it has a deliciously rich chocolatey taste makes it a win win addition in our book.
Chia Seeds
Though they may be small, chia seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch. High in protein and dietary fibre, rich in Vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids and several essential minerals and antioxidants, they help to promote bone health, heart health, joint health and the digestive system as well as reducing inflammation. They can also absorb up to 10 times their weight, helping you to feel fuller for longer.
Chicory Root
The roots and leaves of the chicory plant are a delight of nutrients. The roots particularly are high in dietary fibre, most specifically, inulin. Inulin is a natural soluble dietary fibre that dissolves in water and helps to slow down digestion which keeps you fuller for longer, balances your blood sugar and lowers cholesterol.
Chlorella
Chlorella is a nutrient rich, freshwater algae that’s typically available as a dark green powder or as a tablet. Loaded with protein, fibre, healthy fats, and antioxidants, it contains a whopping 60% protein, and unlike most plant foods, has all nine essential amino acids. It’s also rich in omega 3 fatty acids, iron and vitamin C & B12, a great source of prebiotics and contains trace amounts of magnesium, copper, zinc, potassium, and calcium. And if that wasn’t enough, the algae contains immunostimulators, which stimulate the immune system, meaning chlorella can help fight off infections and keep you fighting fit. If nature was going to make a multivitamin tablet, this would be it.
Flax Seeds
Also known as linseeds, these little golden seeds are mightier than they appear. Not only do they help to keep the heart healthy, they can also help with weight loss and reduce cholesterol. That’s because flax seeds are packed with omega 3 fatty acid, alpha linoleic acid, phytoestrogens, dietary fibre, iron, copper, potassium and magnesium. No wonder they’ve been used for over 5000 years.
Goji Berries
Goji berries have been used for centuries as a natural way to enhance vitality, energy and longevity. With 12 times more antioxidants than blueberries, more Vitamin C than oranges and more iron than spinach, it’s no wonder these little wrinkled berries are one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. They're also known to help with the ageing process and happen to be an excellent source of plant based complete protein.
Guarana
Packed full of potent antioxidant compounds such as tannins, saponins and catechins, Guarana is a Brazilian plant native to the Amazon jungle. An excellent natural source of caffeine, it helps reduce fatigue and improves mental focus and energy without having to neck a triple shot espresso.
Maca
Used by ancient Peruvian warriors to increase their strength and endurance, maca helps the body adjust to stress, build up resistance to disease and support immunity, all thanks to its adaptogenic properties. A natural energy booster, maca has also been known to boost the libido, though we’re not making any claims on that here.
Siberian Ginseng
Siberian ginseng has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years to maintain overall good health. As well as enhancing physical and mental well-being, Siberian ginseng can help reduce tiredness, restore vitality and support the body’s natural defences and immune system.
Spirulina
This blue green algae is regarded as one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. Gram for gram, it packs more protein than red meat, contains all the essential fatty acids your body needs, and also provides loads of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It may help prevent plaque build-up in your arteries, lower blood pressure and boost your immune system. Yes, it turns your drink a funny colour but that’s a small price to pay for all the benefits of this superfood giant.
